Swiss adventurer and former fighter pilot Yves "Jetman" Rossy completed an 8 minute flight over the Grand Canyon on Saturday - his first flight in the United States with his custom jet-powered carbon wing. Yves flew more than 195 feet (60 meters) above the canyon and reached speeds of up to 190 mph (305 km/h).
One of Rossy's biggest hurdles for the canyon flight was receiving certification; in the end, the FAA classified the pilot and wing as an aircraft... and even gave him a registration number. How cool is that?!
The 51-year-old's previous achievements in his jet-powered wing include a trip across the English Channel and flight over Lake Geneva in Switzerland. He says the U.S. flight is among the most memorable experiences of his life.
