Another example of how an unprotected camera mounted on a helmet can become a snag hazard. Kudos to Alan for holding on to the bridle -- I think that slowed things down just enough for Paula to release the helmet (using the stock chin strap buckle) as the bag was coming out of the container! Another reminder of how important it is to have a proper helmet cutaway system when you're jumping with a camera. Thanks to Fernando Yuki for sharing this video with us so others can learn from it.
The purpose of horizontal separation at break-off is to avoid close calls like this. Something tells me there was one too many people shooting video on this tandem.
Line twists arent much fun. Neither is a reserve deployment when youre on your back but it sure is great to have a parachute over your head as quickly as possible. Something tells me this couldve been worse if he had a rear-facing GoPro mounted on the back of his helmet.
FACT: this did not feel good.
Considering ALL the options, including the DZ, the street wouldn't be my first choice. Then again, what do I know.
If there's anything worse then having a nasty hard opening, line twists and a cutaway, it's having your gear scattered across the sky and then bartering with the local South Africans to get your helmet and GoPro back. Fun times all around -- or at least for the locals.
This isn't your typical tandem skydive -- which is fun and safe. In this incident, the tandem passenger got more "close up video" than he paid for. The videographer doesn't give much separation on opening and the tandem snivels right past him, causing a canopy collision that could have ended a lot worse than it did.
This footage of two canopies colliding at low altitude (upper left corner of the screen) should serve as a reminder to watch your airspace and watch out for others -- keep your head on a swivel.
As a new wingsuit pilot with only a few jumps under his belt, Nick experiences a nasty flat spin immediately after exit on this particular jump. He deploys his main on the verge of losing consciousness. He chops his main on the verge of losing bowel control. Nick says hell just stick to bowling from now on.
